A winner of the UW distinction award in 2002 and distinguished alumni, Johnston was chosen to speak at the Honors Convocation because of her success in public relations and her contributions to the University of Wyoming and to the state of Wyoming, including service on the Board of Directors the University of Wyoming Foundation and the Wyoming Business Council.

The convocation, sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, recognized students who made the President’s, Dean’s and Freshman honor rolls during the previous academic year. Undergraduate students are nominated by professors from all of the college’s disciplines and selected by a faculty committee. Previous keynote speakers include Doug Owsley, curator and division head for physical anthropology at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History, University of Wyoming President Tom Buchanan, and historian and biographer Richard Norton Smith.
