TMVOA Supports Opening of New Medical Office in Mountain Village Print E-mail
Thursday, 13 March 2008

The Institute for Altitude Medicine (IFAM) will open a second office in Mountain Village on March 27, in part due to a grant received from Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association (TMVOA). IFAM will be located in the Blue Mesa building at 113 Lost Creek Lane.

With 600,000 people living above 7,000 feet in Colorado and 25 million tourists to Colorado’s high-altitude communities each year, health problems related to or exaggerated by high altitude are very common. IFAM will treat these problems and produce research on the effect of high altitude on common health issues such as heart disease and pregnancy.

IFAM first opened its doors in the Telluride Medical Center last summer after independent consultants identified the opportunity to expand the center’s services to include high-altitude research “in situ.” Studying people living at altitude, as opposed to conducting research at lower altitudes in simulated environments, will produce valuable data, of which little exists today.

“Our mission is to treat patients and consult with high-altitude residents, second homeowners and tourists,” said Dr. Peter Hackett, founder and executive director of IFAM. “In addition, we want to educate residents and visitors about preventing illness and optimizing health in a high-altitude environment. Mountain Village provides an ideal location to study altitude-related problems and develop the most effective treatments for this community and its visitors.”

Dr. Hackett is the clinical director at the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Altitude Research Center and is recognized as the world’s leading authority on high-altitude research and related medical conditions. He selected Mountain Village and Telluride because of their unusually high elevation among Colorado communities (9,000 to 10,000 feet vs. 8,000 for Vail or Aspen). IFAM is the only research center specializing in high-altitude medicine in North America.

“The presence of IFAM will attract academic and highly skilled physicians who will be available for consultations to our residents and visitors,” said Mike Wisniewski, TMVOA board president. “This expansion of medical services offered to our community is outstanding, and it is exciting to support IFAM’s research.”

The grant was awarded based on a proposal IFAM submitted to the TMVOA board last September. The grant supports TMVOA's overall mission of ensuring Mountain Village is a desirable, vital and sustainable area in which to live.
