Clean Drinking Water Fresh from the Sun Print E-mail
Wednesday, 04 June 2008
According to UNICEF, 1.1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water and 5,000 people die every day from water-related illnesses. Innovative Water Technologies hopes to change that by purifying water using energy from the sun.

Innovative Water Technologies (IWT), a Colorado-based company dedicated to researching and developing products related to water treatment and purification, will launch the Sunspring water purification system and the opening of their Rocky Ford, Colo. manufacturing facility on May 29. The Sunspring is a portable, self-contained, solar-powered water purification system that can process enough clean drinking water for remote campgrounds, worksites, emergency response sites and small villages around the world at a reasonable cost.

“IWT has worked hard to develop an affordable, sustainable water system, that can be used to provide clean and safe drinking water to remote locations in Colorado and around the world,” said Jack Barker, president and co-owner of IWT. “We are also happy to call Rocky Ford our new home with the opening of the Sunspring manufacturing facility.”

IWT’s 24,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Rocky Ford is located in Colorado’s South Central Enterprise Zone, a designated economically distressed area. The facility has capacity to produce up to 30 Sunspring units per month with ultimate production capacity of up to 100 units per month.

Owners Carmen and Jack Barker have more than four decades of experience in water and wastewater systems. Through their knowledge and a desire to improve water conditions in remote areas at a reasonable cost, they developed the Sunspring. The Sunspring is a microbiological water purifier that provides high-quality potable water by physically removing pathogens, particulates and turbidity from virtually any water source. The Sunspring provides up to 5,000 gallons per day of purified drinking water and is self-cleaning, efficient and easy to maintain.
