Canadian-based Great Gulf Group announced a unique collaboration on its first U.S. residential high-rise – with renowned artist Dale Chihuly. The Seattle-based artist known for his signature glasswork will collaborate on the design and contribute original installations to 1401 Lawrence, a luxury condominium tower under development in Denver’s emerging theater district.
Chihuly representatives, Parks Anderson and publicist Janet Makela, were present on the building site to announce Chihuly’s involvement to media representatives and community members, along with building architect Peter Clewes of architectsAlliance, Anna Simone of Cecconi-Simone Interior Design and Janet Rosenberg of Janet Rosenberg and Associates Landscape Architects.
“We have always planned an extraordinary glass structure that complements the beauty of Denver’s environs,” said Switzer. “The collaboration with Chihuly completes the vision.”
The alliance with internationally-renowned, architects and designers sets this $165 million project apart from all other Denver building projects, along with its size – at 51 stories it is the tallest residential tower planned for the Denver area. In a statement, Chihuly said, “1401 Lawrence is a fusion of art, architecture and design. From the lobby, up to the roof garden, out to the hallways and even into the elevator cabs, I worked closely with Great Gulf’s talented design team to create some truly unique and dramatic interior and exterior architectural spaces. Denver is a great city that appreciates art and culture and 1401 Lawrence will be a great addition to its evolving cultural district.” Announced in January 2006, the exclusive building will feature 145 private residences, ranging from 1200 to 7400 square feet. Already renowned for its landmark high-rise condominiums designed to enhance city skylines, Great Gulf also plans a rooftop garden situated on the sixth floor, with sweeping views of the Rockies and a vanishing edge pool designed by Rosenberg. Chihuly will create the artwork to be featured in the public spaces, including the lobby, lounges and private dining room. His works will also appear on the rooftop garden and in unlikely spaces such as building elevators and hallways. “This building will be like none other in Denver and this is the first time Dale has partnered with a developer,” said Chihuly representative Anderson. “We look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with Great Gulf, incorporating color, light and artistic vision to the project.” Other impressive collaborators on the project include award-winning Peter Clewes of architectsAlliance, who will design the building with its glass facades and signature point tower design. Anna Simone, herself an award-winning designer, will create the interiors, including individual suites and the building’s public spaces. Switzer also revealed floor plans and exterior renderings at the press conference. Construction began in May on the 5,000-square-foot onsite sales center that will include a full-scale model of a 2,600 square foot suite. The center, complete with exquisite interiors, rich design and furnishings by Cecconi-Simone, is expected to open with a full sales staff in fall 2007. Kentwood City Properties will market the property, and is now accepting reservations. Interested parties can contact Kentwood at 303-436-1401 or register at www.1401Lawrence.com .
