Kathryn Wilson, counselor at JohnstonWells Public Relations, is one of three recipients nationwide of the 2007 William Oxley Thompson Award from the Ohio State Alumni Association.
The annual Thompson award is given to up to three Ohio State University alumni under the age of 36 who have demonstrated outstanding career achievement or civic involvement.
"The Ohio State University gave me my first connection to community,” said Wilson. “When I moved to Denver from Columbus, I knew the first thing to do -- get involved with the alumni association and community organizations. It has made a big difference in my life and hopefully in the lives of others. I feel so fortunate to be recognized."
The winners of the award are selected by a jury of alumni from around the country, with the final three being selected by the board of directors. Wilson is an alumna of Ohio State’s 2002 class, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication and social issues.
During her five years at JohnstonWells, Wilson has grown professionally, starting as an intern and becoming one of the youngest counselors in company history. She was named “Rookie of the Year” by the Colorado Public Relations Society of America in 2005. Wilson divides her time between JohnstonWells and volunteer work for many nonprofits in Denver. Wilson mentors at-risk youth at Manual High School, sits on the board of Colorado Youth at Risk, volunteers for the Denver Press Club and the Public Relations Society of America – Colorado Chapter and is an active member of the Rocky Mountain Ohio State Alumni Association. “Community involvement is very important to our company’s culture,” said GG Johnston, president of JohnstonWells. “Katie epitomizes that rare balance of work ethic and civic duty.” The Thompson Awards Ceremony will be held on Nov. 9 in Columbus, Ohio. Winners also will be the university’s guests at the Ohio State vs. Illinois football game on Nov. 10. Notable past winners of the award include Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the prestigious Heisman Trophy, and Stefanie Spielman, one of the most visible advocates for breast cancer awareness in Ohio. |
